Residential Development Vibration Testing

Vibration Testing for Residential Developments

Residential Development Vibration Surveys

If your proposed residential development is in close proximity to a railway line it is likely that the Local Planning Authority will ask for a noise and vibration assessment. We have many years of experience in helping clients through the vibration aspects of the planning process.

The assessment typically requires continuous vibration monitoring to characterise the Vibration Dose Value (VDV) and Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) vibration levels during day and night periods.

British Standard 6472-1 offers guidance on acceptable vibration criteria within buildings. Ground vibrations may cause reactions ranging from ‘just perceptible’, through ‘concern’ to ‘alarm’ and ‘discomfort’. The subjective response varies widely and is a function of situation, information, time of day and duration.

Vibration Conditions

Where the vibration conditions are constant or regularly repeated throughout the day and assessment is based on measured data, only one representative period need be measured, and the 16-hour daytime (or 8-hour night-time) overall VDV level may be calculated from the shortened measurement using appropriate formulae.

The propagation of ground-borne vibration into buildings is complex and will be dependant upon a number of variables including the building construction, foundations, ground floor slabs, first floor construction, and mass and stiffness of the proposed walls.
